Today, we know that security has a role to play at the early stages\nof the [DevOps workflow](/topics/devops/), but these security controls are\nmostly centered around finding and fixing bugs and vulnerabilities during\ndevelopment.\n\n\nIn this tutorial, we will explore the importance of protecting client-side\napplication code at runtime and guide you through implementing it in your\nGitLab instance using the integration with\n[Jscrambler](https://jscrambler.com/).\n\n\n## The importance of runtime code protection\n\n\nWith web and mobile applications dealing with increasingly sensitive data,\naddressing the application's attack surface requires considering additional\nthreats that are not directly linked to vulnerabilities.\n\n\nThis concern has been widely covered in NIST, ISO 27001, and some of the\nlatest iterations of OWASP guides, such as the [Mobile Application Security\nVerification Standard](https://mobile-security.gitbook.io/masvs/). These\ninformation security standards highlight that attackers who gain unwarranted\naccess to the application's source code may be able to retrieve proprietary\ncode, find ways to bypass app restrictions, and make more progress while\nplanning/automating data exfiltration attacks.\n\n\nAs such, it's important that companies implement an additional security\nlayer (on top of application security best practices) to tackle the threats\nof tampering and reverse engineering of an application's source code.\n\n\n## Getting started with Jscrambler + GitLab\n\n\nA robust code protection approach must include multiple layers to raise the\nbar for reverse-engineering and tampering attempts. Jscrambler achieves this\nby using a combination of code protection techniques, including obfuscation,\ncode locks, runtime protection, and threat monitoring.\n\n\nLet's see how you can easily set up this layered source code protection\nusing Jscrambler in your GitLab instance.\n\n\n### What you need for the Jscrambler integration\n\n\nTo use this integration with Jscrambler, make sure that you meet the\nfollowing prerequisites:\n\n\n* A JavaScript-based project, as Jscrambler can protect JavaScript-based web\nand hybrid mobile apps\n\n* A [Jscrambler account](https://jscrambler.com/signup)\n\n* A GitLab instance where the Jscrambler integration will run\n\n\n### How to configure Jscrambler\n\n\nThe first step of this integration is to define the Jscrambler code\nprotection techniques you want to use. The best way to do this is through\nthe [Jscrambler web app](https://app.jscrambler.com/). You can either select\none of the pre-defined templates or pick techniques one by one. Review [the\nJscrambler guide](https://blog.jscrambler.com/jscrambler-101-first-use/) for\nfurther instructions on choosing Jscrambler techniques. Now, open the file and make sure you remove the\naccess and secret keys from this configuration file by removing the\nfollowing lines.\n\n\n```json\n \"keys\": {\n   \"accessKey\": \"***********************\",\n   \"secretKey\": \"***********************\"\n },\n```\n\n\nThis will prevent having hardcoded API keys, which could pose security\nissues. Inside this file, you will need to define your `build` stage,\nas well as add a new `protect` stage, as shown below.\n\n\n```yml\n\nstages:\n - build\n - protect\n # - deploy\n # ...\n```\n\n\nThe `build` stage should be configured as follows:\n\n\n```yml\n\nbuild:production:\n stage: build\n artifacts:\n   when: on_success\n   paths:\n     - build\n script:\n   - npm i\n   - npm run build\n```\n\n\nThis configuration will run the `npm run build` command, which is a standard\nway of building your app to production, placing the resulting production\nfiles in the `/build` folder. Plus, it ensures that the `/build` folder\nbecomes available as a [GitLab CI\nartifact](https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/ci/pipelines/job_artifacts.html) so\nthat it can be used later in other jobs.\n\n\nHere, make sure that you set the build commands and build folder according\nto your own project, as these may vary.\n\n\nNext, configure the `protect` stage as shown below:\n\n\n```yml\n\nbuild:production:obfuscated:\n stage: protect\n before_script:\n   - npm i -g jscrambler\n dependencies:\n   - build:production\n artifacts:\n   name: \"$CI_JOB_NAME\"\n   when: on_success\n   paths:\n     - build\n   expire_in: 1 week\n script:\n   # By default, all artifacts from previous stages are passed to each job.\n   - jscrambler -a $JSCRAMBLER_ACCESS_KEY -s $JSCRAMBLER_SECRET_KEY -o ./ build/**/*.*\n```\n\n\nThis stage starts by installing the Jscrambler npm package globally. Next,\nit is configured to execute Jscrambler at the end of each new production\nbuild process. Typically, you will want to ensure that Jscrambler is the\nlast stage of your build process, because Jscrambler transforms the source\ncode extensively and can also add [anti-tampering\nprotections](https://docs.jscrambler.com/code-integrity/documentation/transformations/self-defending).\nThis means changing the files after they have been protected by Jscrambler\nmay break the app functionality.\n\n\nThis `protect` stage is configured to access the Jscrambler API keys that\nhave been loaded as GitLab environment variables. Finally, the output of the\nprotection is placed into the same `/build` folder and made available as a\nGitLab CI artifact for posterior use (e.g., a deploy job).\n\n\nNote that while this example shows how to use the Jscrambler CLI client to\nprotect the code, Jscrambler is compatible with [other\nclients](https://docs.jscrambler.com/code-integrity/documentation/api/clients),\nsuch as Grunt, Gulp, webpack, Ember, and Metro (React Native).\n\n\nAnd, that's all there is to it! You can configure your `deploy` stage as\nusual, which should access the contents of the `build/` folder and ensure\nyour protected files are available in a live production environment.\n\n\n### Checking the protection result\n\n\nAs a final (optional) step, you might want to check the live app and see\nwhat its source code looks like. You can do that easily by using a browser\ndebugger and opening the files from the \"Sources\" tab. This is intended behavior, which is very useful to prevent\nreverse-engineering of the code.\n\n\n## Final thoughts\n\n\nAs we saw in this tutorial, setting up this integration between Jscrambler\nand GitLab is very straightforward.
